1974 Alderwood All-Stars Boys Midget Tournament

In 1974 Alderwood Softball Assoc. hosted a Midget Tournament. Our Midget Harper Diesel team under Freddie Merritt would go on to be the overall champs.

News Article courtesy of  Paul Wilson

They beat Oshawa 7-0 in the opener, next Galt 9-0, Eringate 6-0 in their third game and took Seven Oak 14-0 in the final game.
The three winning pitchers were Rod Favreau, Jackie Phillips, and Dave Jackson who only allowed two hits in four games.

Alderwood was awarded the Bernie Fabric Memorial Trophy awarded by former Etobicoke mayor Bruce Sinclair
This team joined the North York Softball League as a member and became a team to be taken lightly.

1974 All-Star Boy's (Harper Detroit Diesel)

Harper Detroit Diesel has been a 70’s sponsor in Alderwood and the teams under the coach Freddie Merritt would go on to win several tournaments. Harper Diesel moved into Alderwood in 1946 and started sponsoring about 1970.

1974 Alderwood teams would play other teams in Etobicoke for an Etobicoke Softball Trophy. If they won they could go on to be able to compete in the City or Metro Toronto Fastball Championships. It seems that they could win a city championship but still had to qualify for the Provincial Trophy. Fred Merritt would become one of the most decorated with several championships over the years of his coaching.

2009 All Star Week

In between July and August there was a mid summer break. For all of those who did not go on any vacation we had events for the players at the park. The main attraction was when an OPP officer came down to the park with his radar gun to test the pitching speed of the players.

The BBQ was going and free burgers and hot dogs for all the players. Every player that participated was given a personal All-Star dog tag with the sixtieth logo on it.

It seems that this team did very well or it was two different teams. Finalists are usually 2nd place team, unless they were awarded the badge for making it to the final round to acquire the championship.

In 1972 the Alderwood Bantam Boys Select team won the Etobicoke Championship and went on to compete in the all Ontario championships in Scarborough. Note the picture above of the team and the team’s dugout witch seems to be lacking any protective cages.

In 1973 the Junior Boys rep team (17 yr old) would be the first and only Alderwood boys team to win the All Etobicoke Championship and go on to win the Ontario Amateur Softball Assoc Championship.

Brad Heasty’s parents Joseph "Buzz" Heasty and mother, Willena "Billie" Heasty were involved in the early years as Executives, Conveners, Coach's and Umpires in the 1950s era through to the 1970s. You can find “Billie” coaching a girls team in 1972 and they were also Champs.
